Video: What is “Recycled Gold?”

Today, many fine jewelers and the jewelry industry as a whole are grappling with the contradictions and tensions between who can afford luxury products and who labors to produce them. I co-produced this video with jeweler Ana Brazaityte and the rest of the team at The Better Jewelry Project to explore how some jewelers are working to align the values behind the symbol of their creations with the sourcing of their materials. There’s so much to say and discuss about this. This video is a great place to start.

During the Chicago @responsible_jewelry Conference, we spoke with Desiree Binternagel (@fairevergold), Andrea Jose (@andreajosejewels), Melissa Scoppa (@melissascoppa), Dana Bronfman (@danabronfman), and Delphine Leymarie (@delphinejewelry) about why they choose to support responsible artisanal gold mining. The Fairmined (@fairminedofficial) certification referenced in this video is one example of responsible artisanal gold mining. To learn more about the positive impacts of purchasing certified artisanally mined gold in supporting social, environmental, and racial justice, check out our consumer guide at betterjewelryproject.org. Pure Earth (@pureearthnow), Melissa Scoppa and Emily Phillippy (@emilychelseajewelry), and Fairever contributed video and photos included.
